In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re excited to highlight the stories of some of our outstanding team members.

Mike Landa is one of our dedicated Precon Project Managers based out of our Greensboro office. Whether he’s coordinating with trade partners, reviewing estimates, or ensuring full project coverage, Mike consistently applies the principles of “The Samet Way” throughout the preconstruction process.

Where are you from?

I was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, a city located on the Mexico-US border across the Rio Grande from Eagle Pass, Texas. In the early ’90s, my dad moved to the U.S. for work, and later, he brought my mother and me to join him, seeking better opportunities for our family.

Can you tell us about your journey into the construction industry?

Before finishing high school, I gained some experience in residential construction, working summers on new home builds doing masonry. But my real career in construction began after graduation. While on vacation with my brother in Pennsylvania, I got a call from my uncle, a seasoned professional in the commercial HVAC industry. He asked if I’d like to join him as a helper on a large project—a data center for Facebook (now Meta) in Forest City, NC. That opportunity was my first experience in the commercial sector, and it opened my eyes to the vast possibilities within the construction industry.

After spending three and a half years in HVAC, I decided to pursue an architectural degree to further my understanding of the field. After graduation, I briefly worked in design but quickly realized that I wanted to be more involved in the construction process. This led me to general contracting and eventually brought me to Samet, where I’ve been part of the preconstruction team for two and a half years.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you personally and professionally?

Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the immense contributions Latinos and Latinas have made to the U.S. across generations. Our community continues to help fuel the nation’s growth as entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, and public servants. For me, this month is about showcasing those achievements, inspiring younger generations, and bringing people together through our shared heritage.

Is there a tradition or value from your culture that you bring into the workplace?

Hard work is possibly the biggest value my culture has instilled in me, and it’s something I carry with me every day at work. My upbringing taught me that with dedication and persistence, success is not just possible—it’s inevitable. I believe that staying consistent to your work will always lead to great results, no matter the challenge.

Are there any Hispanic leaders or role models who have inspired you?

My parents are my greatest role models. They made the courageous decision to bring me to the U.S., despite not knowing the language. Their resilience and hard work have always inspired me, and I credit them with shaping who I am today. They are my heroes.

Outside of work, what are some hobbies or activities you enjoy?

I love spending time with my family and attending church. Whether it’s family dinners, outings, or just relaxing at home, I cherish these moments. They remind me of how precious and short our time together is.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor our differences and acknowledge the diverse backgrounds that make up our society. We may come from different places, speak different languages, and have unique experiences, but we share common values and goals. Our journey through life is not a solitary one—it’s built on the collective effort and support of those around us.

Thank you for sharing your story with us Mike. We’re thankful for all you do to support Samet and those around you!
